I can't believe how many people I have had to try and help recently whose dogs were really disinterested in food in the environments we wanted to train in. One, a fearful GSD, responded *very* well to a click then hugs and kisses and scratches all over from her owner. Since the owner was being put under great pressure from family and friends to go to the 'shout loudly' J&P training at a local club, she was thrilled at being able to give such a great reward and see it work. She relaxed a lot and so did the dog. So the reinforcement was reinforcing for owner and dog and is beginning to break a vicious circle of stress in a way I don't think food would have achieved so quickly. Not so much pleasure in giving a food treat as in giving hugs and kisses to a dog you love!
